PRESENT:        Dr. James Taylor, Chairman, Pat Lariviere, R.N., Co-Chairman, Beverly Knox, R.N., Dr. Lois Roth-Johnson, Dr. Martin Haspel, Jane Crowley,                       M.S., R.S., Health Agent, John Knight, Charles Harris

        I.      OPENING STATEMENTS

Dr. Jim Taylor introduced Charles Harris, Chairman of Wastewater Management, replacing Sandy Bayne.

John Knight advised that he cannot make any of our meetings through the summer as he is scheduled to support and man the Information Booth.

        II.     WINDMILL WEEKEND

Pat Lariviere advised that she has submitted the application and other requirements.  She has not yet received a confirmation or further information from Paul re size of area, tent, location etc.  Pat will continue to follow up with him.

Pat advised that the time is 10AM to 4PM on both Saturday and Sunday.  Parking is dreadful so get there early, especially on Sunday with the parade.

Jane Crowley reviewed the schedule of topics we had previously discussed.
1.      Sun Safety - Jean Roma has committed to representation though we do not know their actual time commitment.  They will bring their tent and equipment along with a presentation.  Based on this, they do need space for the tent and Pat confirmed she will check with Paul
2.      Water Testing – along with handing out the vials and labels, we can be prepared to discuss:
o       What the BoH does for your Water Quality
§       Simple presentation on Septic Systems, what happens during rain and Eastham’s aquifer
§       Jane noted that the biggest gain is for the BoH to get the Public to support the initiatives and to make small changes that will help all
o       What information Nitrate Water Testing provides to us and what we do with it
o       What are the current water testing results
o       Wastewater Management – comment on the 3 main points
§       Water supply
§       Wastewater (Charles will work with Jane to develop an information sheet – short with bullet points)
§       Water quality in freshwater ponds
3.      Personal Health
o       Blood Pressure readings – use as a way to start a conversation and only medical people can take
o       Brochures and information on:
§       Flu Shots and Clinics
§       Weight, Blood Pressure, Alcohol, Smoking, etc

All agreed that this was a good agenda for the Windmill Weekend.  By the August Workshop, we should have all flyers, banners, and information sheets to review.

III.    WATER QUALITY PROGRAM AND WASTEWATER UPDATES

·       Jane Crowley and Sheila Vanderhoef will meet next week with the consultants and the project is moving forward.  Developing finer points of permitting and looking for financial opportunities.  Cape Cod Commission Meeting is scheduled for July 21, 2011 and Jane will comment at it.
·       Received notification by MAP authority re Wellfleet connection to Eastham.  Jane is working with the consultant to develop wording and information for response.
·       The Wastewater in Rock Harbor has received a reclassification as Eastham has been pushing for.  It is considered a Boat Basin and not an Estuary.  We have been heard and this reclassification will result in a good savings to the town financially and shift focus of the problem resolution away from the proposed sewer which would not have solved the problem.    The issue to be resolved concerns the fuel and oil from the boats.

IV.     OTHER BUSINESS/CORRESPONDENCE

Agendas and minutes should be sent to Mary Beth to post on the internet.  This will help all as the information will be easy to find.

Dr. Taylor asked all for ideas for public statement at next meeting.  All agreed that we should promote Windmill Weekend.  Also we should talk about the negative impact of using fertilizers/weed killers/pesticides and mention alternatives like vinegar which can be used to control ants.

Next workshop date – August 16, 2011

Charles mentioned that we need to focus on our fresh water ponds.  It has been stated that the ponds closer to Boston are very bad, but as the population grows here, that trend will move her as well.  We need to catch up to control and reduce nutrients in our ponds and then develop a plan to maintain them.

Meeting adjourned at 10:15AM
